I Need Help Deciding What Career to Choose! Part Two -- The Glitter of Job Openings at a Big Company May Be Blinding

As I said in part one of “I Need Help Deciding What Career to Choose“ when it comes to choosing careers, the first thing you need to consider is the day-to-day and hour-to-hour characteristics of alternative vocations. Choosing employers is very similar to choosing careers; you have to research the nature of the work environment to find the one that’s right for you.

A common career mistake a lot of people make is to believe that a big company is the ideal place to find a job. Big companies always seem to have lots of job openings. They also have nice facilities, plenty of customers and cash. Perhaps the most seductive thing about working for a big company is the fact that everyone knows their name. But all that glitters is not gold! Here are a few of the pros and cons about choosing a career with a big company.

Job Security Can Be An Illusion – Growing sales in a very large business is quite difficult, but shareholders demand profit growth in order to increase stock prices. That’s why big companies often lead the way in adopting new forms of automation, or moving jobs overseas. Unfortunately, this also means that they frequently layoff people in one part of the world while hiring in another. If you work in an area with a high cost of living, your career will always be at risk in a big company.

Potential for Growth – Big companies have lots of employees and lots of job openings, so theoretically, there is tons of potential for career growth. The downside is that they are also very political; infested with human sharks that play the career game for keeps. If you’re still choosing careers and want to work someplace with lots of options, a big company might be right for you.

I Need Help Deciding What Career to Choose! Part Three -- The Sanctuary of Public Service

If you’re looking for “text book job security,” when choosing careers you just have to take a close look at government jobs; particularly if you find yourself saying “the jobs in my area stink.” There are government jobs everywhere.

The Joshua Tree National Park is virtually in the middle of nowhere (actually it’s in the desert of Southern California about 25 miles from my house). There is a park store near the east gate. It is 20 miles from the nearest grocery store, gas station, or anything else that looks like civilization, yet there are a half a dozen government jobs based there. If you live in a rural or remote area, your career search may lead you to government jobs.

I Need Help Deciding What Career to Choose! Part Four – Small Companies Are Just Plain Fun

It’s true; working for a small entrepreneurial company is lots of fun. And if you’re having a tough time choosing careers, it may be the best place for moving around to try different jobs. While small company jobs may be the most enjoyable, they do have some downsides as well. Let’s look at both sides of the coin.

Advantages of Working for a Small Company

The biggest plus to working for a small company is the fact that you’re always going to be treated like a person – not a number. Everyone will know your name, including the president and owner. You may also find that they actually care what you think!
Small companies are a lot like a family. You really get to know your coworkers and their personal lives. You are probably more likely to build friendships that go beyond work. If you have a personal problem, they’re more likely to cut you slack and may even offer to give you a hand.

I Need Help Deciding What Career to Choose! Part Five – The Path to Rapid Advancement; Midsized Growth Companies

If you’re just beginning your career search, or thinking about changing careers, a midsized growth company may be the best place to start. There is very little downside and lot of upside.

Unlike small companies which tend to stay small and large companies or government organizations that find it impossible to grow quickly, midsized companies tend to be more dedicated to growth than anywhere else. This means more job openings to choose from and more important, opportunities for promotion that don’t involve climbing all over your coworkers to get ahead.

Midsized companies have many of the advantages of a small company in that people know who you are and what you do and you’ll still find yourself rubbing elbows with future stars. Of course the stars that come out of midsized growth companies tend to go on to bigger and better things, so if you’re connected, so will you.

Your personal life tends to be more respected; less late nights, weekends and company outings.

I Need Help Deciding What Career to Choose! Part Six – The Critical Role of College Internships

In my final segment on choosing careers, I want to focus on the vital role of college internships. I can talk for hours about the various characteristics of different companies and you can study their web sites until you’re blue in the face, but nothing compares to actually walking through the door and experiencing alternative career choices firsthand. The best way to do this is through a college internship.

Not only do college internships help you experience the culture inside alternative companies, it’s the best way to line up the job offer you want after graduation. Even if you don’t end up working for a company you’ve interned with, you’ll find a lot more job openings if you have legitimate company names on your resume, letters of reference, and samples of real work you’ve accomplished.
